Use a tube of sealant with the nozzle cut off and a cartridge gun.
Apply the silicon around the area, immediately smooth over with a wet finger.
Silicon "skins" very quickly once used so smooth with wet finger pretty quick

Also, before you start, prepare a small amount of washing up liquid diluted with water about half and half. Dip your finger in this solution before smoothing. This stops the sealant from sticking to your finger.
