If you don't want your dog to set the alarm off, put it in a room in which the detector is switched off. As regards your husband working shifts, you can set the alarm as normal when you go to bed. When your husband comes home, he will probably trigger the alarm's warning sound when he comes in at the front door. He will have about 30 seconds to get to the keypad and turn the alarm off. When he has done that, the alarm will be unset (i.e. not likely to go off) until he does what you did when you went to bed.
A proper alarm system can be set in various ways - Ours has 2 settings - at night, everyone is upstairs so we keep the downstairs and garage kept on up and the upstairs detectors omitted from that setting with the kitchen detector switched off on all settings due to the dog - it is possible to get detectors that can be set for animals depending on the size and climbing abilities (cats). The other setting is for everyone out and dog in kitchen.
