On a recent gardening programme I heard someone say that Dandelion seeds can travel 5 miles. How do they know?

I would have thought in a strong wind over flat land, that would be a modest guess. what would stop them?

You are probably right Lynne. They should organise a competition with a prize for the person who finds the one that has flown the furthest!
All I know is that far too many have landed on my lawn this year! I shall have to drive 5 miles against the wind and when I find them, dig them all up!

They are nice in a salad!
Dandelions just growing in grassy patch and my helper has decided not to cut until the flowers start to die as while they are flowering it is helping bees .
If this is the case I am more than ok about them growing in grass.
If dandelions were difficult to grow and came from the Himalayas, the RHS would give it an Award of Garden Merit!

Sure as a soldier to find the best place,
Dig down deep and then spread out
A green, split groundsheet; a coarse, cheerful face,
Never fresh yellow, on a deceptive neck
Staffed with reinforcements; yellow job soon done,
Consolidates, constructs a startling wig
As decoy for the winds to take;
Sticks the fuzz aboveground, waits.
Platoons of sons are whirled away to dig...

Stiff bald fathers with coarse-pored pates
See to wider billets for their groundsheets.
