I'm thinking of redecorating my hall, landing and stairs. It is only a small house so its not a big area, but it is awkward and I would like to get someone in to strip the existing wallpaper and repaint. Would anyone have any idea what I would be likely to be charged for this (not including the cost of the paint)? Its my first house and I don't really have a clue!

chazza, not that this really answers, it but it depends on who you get to do it. And the same goes for the q below. For example, I am in my first abode too and we had the bathroom done (nb we went to a local plumbing shop - it does trade bathrooms which means hotels may go there to get their baths etc etc...got an enamal bath for 70!!, would defo recommend smaller shops than the big stores)...and boyfs mate is a plumber so it was a better price than if we had got a plumber in. When we have had other work done, we have tried to get a few quotes to compare and also if you can try to get someone that's recommended. Sorry it doesn't answer as such and it's more advicey!

just paint the wallpaper. it is quicker and cheaper and easier, and hides any imperfections in the wall - it also adds a small amount of insulation.

my mum and dad have about 5 layers of paper and paint on their walls and say it makes the room warmer

The best way to find out would be to get 3 or 4 no obligation quotes from reputable firms in your area - check for appropriate credentials and ask for references. If they want the job and they are decent they will oblige. Try the yellow pages who have some good guide pages on getting domestic jobs done in your home.

Failing that, why not just have a go yourself. You can always hire platform equipment for those awkward spaces.

Octavius and Yoko it is too awkward to do myself, the easiest thing is to get someone in. At the bottom of the stairs the ceiling is 2 storeys high so i couldnt do it myself.

Also the wallpaper is not flat so it would not be nice painted over
