Live Without Water?

We’ve got a major leak problem in the house which will lead to us having no water for about 10 days while we get the place repiped.

Can we realistically live without water for that time, or should we move out for a while? I know we can buy bottled water, and I could have a shower at my dad’s house but we take on-tap water for granted. It sounds a bit tricky. Even cleaning your teeth or washing up a teaspoon needs thinking about before you do it.

Ok, First World problem, I know. People have to put up with a lot worse, but just wondering if it’s realistic to stay in the house while the work is going on.

When we lived on a farm in the 40s we didn't have water on tap. We had a well in the farmyard and for six years we managed. Even in winter when the well froze and we had to melt snow. It was just a way of life to us. We survived.

Meh if the insurers are paying get a good hotel and treat it like a getaway, if you can on the other hand cream off the money from them rough it a little and hire a little water bowser, it'll be perfectly manageable. x

If you get on with your neighbours and they are in close proximity I would ask if I may run a hosepipe from their garden tap if available. Failing that the prospect of a hotel stay on the insurance co for 10 days is a no brainer.

As you still have a water supply into the property it wouldn't be difficult for a plumber to run flexible pipes to your major water outlets as a 'work-around) whilst they do the proper works. Might not look pretty but......

Clover would this not be something covered by your house insurance?
If so book into a hotel and claim it back - life is too short to struggle without water for 10 days!

If you have a major leak problem IN the house ,can we assume that the supply up to the main shut off is ok? If thats the case any decent plumber could fit temporary supplies to areas where needed,using plastic pipe within a few hours.

We've done without a washing machine for over a year, (launderette and neighbours) and went without any bath or shower for 4 months (strip wash only) as well as no loo for a week. No water at all would be a nuisance mainly for washing hands and dishes...but perfectly possible for only 10 days. BUT in your case I would still move out because of the disruption of actual building work - floors up etc.
