Hi good AB'ers can you use varnish on top of exterior wood dye on wood for a great finish ? On external wood , just have a surplus of varnish . Or not ? , thanks good Aber's GL.

Depends what type of varnish, a polyurethane varnish will be suitable.
Make sure the varnish is suitable for exterior use.
What type of wood are you hoping to acheive the 'great finish' on. Any old surplus varnish may not be good enough for exterior use.
I don't think you will ever (or almost never) get a superb finish on anything by using leftovers unless you are lucky enough to have the RIGHT leftovers and you do superb prep work first. If your varnish is outdoor varnish you may get an ok finish.
I recommend Yacht varnish for an extremely durable finish that will withstand all weather conditions for years.
At this point we dont know if he is varnishing fence panels or a family heirloom ?
