Sometime ago in this forum, a product was recommended as being effective at removing stains from the sole plate of a steam iron. Please, can anyone remember the name.

What about silver stains off clothes already been damaged by a steam iron?

You need 'Iron cleaner' by Vilene. Local ironmongers or possibly a knitting supplies shop should carry it. Comes in a small stick like a lipstick. Rub over a warm hotplate and the surface is cleaned off.

Site here has online ordering: http://www.bredons.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Craft __55.html

I got a stick from Robert Dyas - it's by Rowenta and it's only tiny (like a thick piece of chalk) and you rub it up and down the plate and then wipe and it's nice and clean.

It was only a couple of quid, got it way back in April or something and it's still going strong.

Thank you fellow forumers. I started by using the product from Robert Dyas by Rowenta and it worked wonders.
