Hands-Free Laundry Carrier

Both Mrs A and me, for different reasons, have trouble carrying in the laundry basket from the washing line. We both need two hands to use sticks/rails/whatever to keep upright.

Wheels aren't much good, as the ground/path are lumpy, not nice and smooth.

What we're thinking about is something that hangs on your back - the back being preferable, as it would mean we could still see the ground and what hazards there were!

Any ideas?

Allen. We have two pop-up mesh laundry hampers. Lots on Amazon. It would be easy to attach two long straps to make them suitable for putting on your backs.

Surely a backpack would be unsafe if you are both unsteady on your feet and could cause you to topple over. Invest in a tumble drier if you have the space for one. I haven't put washing out for years.

I hate using the tumble dryer as everything comes out really creased, they eat electricity and are bad for my carbon footprint.

I agree, get a tumble drier.

Hopkirk, I find tumble drying greatly reduces the necessity to iron - nothing comes out creased.

No to a tumble drier if you ccan absolutely avoid it.

You can get wicker back baskets of varying sizes but they are expensive.

Are you able to use walking frames? You can get net bags that attach to them.

Tiny London flat. If we got a tumble drier one of us would have to move out.

Walking frames difficult. Down a few concrete steps, rough ground, poor path. Feet are best, just.

But the various bags+straps ideas will work, with some mods.

(Ted down the road used to say “Don’t get old, Allen. Whatever you do, don’t get old.” Did I listen?)

You need to rig up a line and pulley with a suspended basket. You could whizz your laundry through the air to the back door :)

I've been thinking about this again - could you extend your washing to near your back door and have it as a pully? I remember people having pully washing lines years ago, often pegging out the washing from their upstairs windows.
That way you wouldn't have to carry the washing.

There's the advert for, I think, beer where they attach it to some sort of washing line and send it across the street. Would something like that be feasible? I think they gang washing out of windows in Italy.

What’s a maiden (in this context)? Years ago you’d have got a ‘girl’ who’d come in for a few quid a week, but no more.
