Inefficient Toasting.

I have a 2-slice toaster but usually only toast one slice - egg on toast for breakfast or cheese on toast for a snack. So half the electricity used to toast my single slice is wasted! The only single slice toaster I have found is the Russell Hobbs 24200 at £39 (quite expensive).

Why can't the makers simply put a switch on a 2 slice toaster to select one or both slots? Maybe someone does - anyone know?

perhaps no one except you wants one?
Why not toast 2 and keep one back for next time. Cold toast is nicer to me
How do you do cheese on toast in a toaster?

I make a slice of toast & put cheese on it - simples!
If you have a smart meter or know the wattage you could work out the wastage. Probly about 0.2 pence a slice
easy but the cleanup afterwards is difficult

Fair enough but it adds up over the years and we are always being told to find ways of conserving energy aren't we.
yes the cheese and eggs are red herrings here Tilly2 but you can buy toasting bags to put the toast and cheese back in again to melt the cheese if your interested in trying it

In that case why did Russell Hobbs make a single slice toaster?
Bob, I get that but one slice of bread with cheese on top will make a mess of the toastie bag.
Yes, id make one with two slices then eat them both but dave could cut in two, eat one piece and reheat the rest next meal.
Or just have a cheese sandwich occasionly to vary things
Dave, some single slot toasters here:-

Single slot yes - but long enough to take 2 slices so the energy usage will probably be the same as for a 2 slot toaster.
Dave.. You need to lighten up and stop worrying.
Okay.. you did pay well over the odds for your toaster. There was a point in time where that toaster cost nearly £40 .. unfortunately you happened to buy it then. As a rule its a £25 toaster.
As for your wasting electricity.. It is an 820watt toaster. Therefore in the 2 minutes it takes to do your toast, it costs less than 1p to operate.
You will be getting yourself a bad name, trying to save 1/2p.
I`ve often wondered the same thing - it might be that the mechanism for selecting a single slot is too bulky for a compact toaster. Dualit toasters (4 and 2 slot) have that facility and they are quite big so maybe that's the reason.
My gripe with toasting one slice in a two slot toaster is that one side is browned nicely, and the other is hardly touched! Put it in again for a few seconds and the browned side is burnt!
I can't find a 2 slice Dualit toaster that has the option to heat only one side.
davebro, that simple switch adds cost to the toaster and most people would not be prepared to pay the extra. It's a competitive market.

With my toaster (most toasters?) 2 elements are used to toast one slice of bread and 3 to toast 2. That one wasted element is not worth worrying about

Easy - turn the toaster on its side and use it like a grill ..... isn't that what everybody does lol ??
carole, my toaster toasts one slice very well
Turn it round halfway?
