I don't know about growing them, but the very best tomatoes I've bought are Marmande, a beefsteak-type. Lucky that my local Waitrose has them.

Before making any recommendations it would help if we knew whether you are growing indoors(greenhouse etc.) or outdoors. Whether you are using pots of bags or trying in the ground, plus where about you are in the UK is also useful. Outside in Aberdeen will be much different that outside in Andover. It is great therapy when the weather is kind whatever.

You never did come back bob. I take it you have changed your mind then. I am busy contemplating making a mirrored surround for my outside efforts to increase the heat, infra, and uv levels. No such thing as too much sunshine with tomatoes as long as you are watering and feeding them. Alava is the tomato expert on here and can give it to you chapter and verse if he pops up and you decide to re-engage. It is important to use a variety that is viable outside if you do not have a greenhouse or tunnel. Deep roots are the first thing and if you use the Tomato bags ... empty them into a deep pot or tub. They are far too shallow for serious results. Do not grow Tomatoes in the near vicinity of Potatoes. That can be double disaster.
