Miracle Gro Pour And Feed

Hi I have just purchased the above named product for my Rose bushes in the garden. I am told it is for pot plants and hanging baskets only. How can that be logical.

I'm only guessing but maybe it contains a chemical which they don't want to leech into the drainage system.

plant food manufacturers would like you to buy as much as possiblem hence packaging more or less the same stuff as specialist feed for various things. Apart from special stuff for lime hating plants, I use whatever is to hand on everything.

It might be good to grow foliage, but it's possible you need a different type of feed to encourage flowering of roses. I don't know, but it would be worth investigating.

Pt Plants and Haning baskets need a different fertilizer ratio to those of plants growing free in the ground. Pour & feed is the most expensive way of feeding any plants, but is convenient for small pots and hanging baskets -you don't need to mix a gallon up like you do with the powdered stuff.

It won't do your roses any harm but frankly it won't do then that much good either -Roses have different needs as to Hydrangeas, tomatoes etc. Thats why there are different fertilisers.

From the RHS website:

"Roses in borders:
To encourage abundant blooms, feed twice a year:
in March/April before flowering ;
in mid-summer after the first flush of flowers (especially for repeat-flowering types).
Sprinkle general-purpose or rose fertiliser on the soil around the plant, at a rate of 70g per sq m (2oz per sq yd). Then mulch the soil with well-rotted manure or garden compost, leaving a gap of 10cm (4in) around the base of the stems"

So, if you're going for the Miracle-Gro brand anyway, perhaps this might be your best option?
