It got me thinking back to when I was a lad when it was sold in corner shops in recycled lemonade bottles. It looked to have been a shoestring operstion. Where would the wholesaler have got their supplied from?

Probably got it in large containers Sandy although I can’t recall it being sold in lemonade bottles , imagine what would happen if one took a swig thinking it was lemonade?

There are times when Health and Safety are a good thing. You made me think of a time when my father returned after a day cycling through the Highlands .. he was really thirsty and grabbed a bottle of lemonade from under the sink. Gulped a mouthful, before realising it was bleach !!

Health and safety standards were different then. They did have a badly printed label stuck over the original lemonade label.

I worked bottling bleach as a part time job while at school. The guy I worked for was my friend's dad - he had a small multi-faceted (!) business. We got carboys of sodium hypochlorite from the local chemical factory & diluted it with water in big pots to the right strength Then bottled it with a jug & funnel, finally corking & labelling the bottles for delivery to local shops.
Some bleach got spilt so my jeans & boots were always rotting away!

Any bottles they could get. The most common one in Belfast was Cantrell and Cochrane.

Household bleach (both thick and thin) is a lot more "dangerous" than many realise. Not only does it contain huge amounts of (toxic) chlorine gas, but is also strongly alkaline (ie caustic). People tend to use much more than is needed, too.

I vaguely remember such a thing, also tv adverts at the time advising people not to store bleach in pop bottles.

Bleach and other poisons always used to come in rib-sided bottles so that poorly-sighted people could tell it instantly by touch.

Ours didn't - we didn't re-use pop bottles tho' - more like clear glass wine bottles.

my mother was having a sneaky drink one night, poured all the quarter bottle of vodka into a cup, and in the dark poured out the lemonade only to find it was bleach. she roasted the hell outta my brother who she blamed LOL.
