Is there a load of hassle involved and how does the new supplier know your usage in order to give you a quote?

Not much hassle - new supplier contacts the old to make the change. You supply usage details - e.g. monthly spend - via comparison websites.
having said that the proliferation of tariffs with most suppliers is an absolute nightmare and it is exceedingly difficult to make an informed choice.
Compare the deals in your area with comparison sites - use at least two
https://www.uswitch.com/
https://www.moneysupermarket.com/store/gas-and-electricity/enquiry/
https://www.comparethemarket.com/energy/

Give as much detail as you can, if you have your old bills for information they will be useful.
When you have chosen your new supplier, they will let your old supplier know and it will be seamless.
I switch every year without problems.
They may not be the cheapest, but Sainsbury Energy give you 8000 nectar points and triple points for as long as you have them. They also do all the switch for you. Probably the best deal out there in the long run. I suppose only good if you shop in Sainsbury. But sounds good.
The most reliable way to make a comparison is by using your annual consumption (in Kilowatt Hours). You can find these figures if you have your bills for the last year. You can do a comparison using your annual spend but this can be less reliable, especially if there have been tariff changes during that year.

You really should make a comparison, especially, as I suspect, you are on a standard variable rate. These are usually the suppliers' most expensive tariffs. As well as that, as the name suggests, they can vary (i.e. go up) at any time. Using one of the sites mentioned makes the process very easy. All you need to do is to provide meter readings and they do the rest.

Thank you everyone.
We're only paying £55 a month for the whole lot and that's with Utility Point.
