I’ve just moved into a flat and the boiler is in the cupboard in my room. The mechanical timer looks ancient and is quite noisy. I removed it from the case and left it hanging by its wires and this greatly reduced the rate long noise but I then panicked and put it back in to be safe. Is there anything I can do myself to reduce the noise? If not could I ask our plumber to remove the timer completely and then we’d just opposite central heating via thermostat? Thanks so much

You could try a a bit of rubber between the timer and the mounting.
If you don't use the timer then just switch the boiler off.
If you operate the boiler by thermostat the boiler is likely to come on at night - is the boiler noisy?
I don't know why the timer should be noisy - it's only a clock. Short of replacing it can you insulate it inside the cupboard with a cushion or pillow?
A quick search suggests that if the old timer is an MT10 mechanical timer, then it could be replaced by a DT20 digital programmer:
