Can you paint them? Is there a particular paint you should use? I'm not in a position to buy new, and really dislike the ones I have at the moment.

I wouldn’t paint them as I don’t believe any paint can withstand the heavy duty cleaning and general kitchen use but there are products that claim to be suitable such as this https://www.homebase.co.uk/rustoleum-kitchen-worktop-transformation-black/12811446.html

Another option is a type of sticky back vinyl specifically for worktops but I’m not keen on that.
I forgot about overlays, a sort of thin worktop that slots over your old ones. No idea what the prices are like https://www.dreamdoors.co.uk/worktops-sinks/kitchen-worktops/quartz-overlay-worktops
Quartz overlay is my best advice if you want to cut cost have peace of mind when it come to installing your new overlay worktop
