Open Coal Fire - What's It Called?
46 Answers
When I was a child we had an open coal fire. The coal was kept in place by iron fretwork, an ornate railing if you like.
The bit I'm asking about is a solid metal flap that was immediately in front of this 'railing'. It could be lowered to create a shelf on which our enamel teapot lived, keeping the tea warm / stewed. Does this flap have a name? In the up position it hid the railing and was hinged at the bottom to let down and become a shelf

barry1010 you're right, the front part that keeps the coal in, is called the fret.

Thank you all, your suggestions have led me to this link that is the same principle but not identical in looks to our old fire. https:/ /www.gr atefire placeac cessori es.co.u k/18-st ar-all- night-b urner-o pen-fir e-burns -coals- and-log s-matt- black
The text tells me that the flap is indeed a damper and not a teapot/iron stand nor a jacket potato keep hot stand. The tool in the picture used to open/close the damper is identical the one we used.
This has also bought back memories of surely one of the most dangerous appliances - the gas poker.
As always, I appreciate your answers, thank you

I wonder how many of us are looking at old ranges and remembering our childhoods. Your thread lead me to this Barry. This is almost identical to the ranges that both my Grandmothers cooked on.
