Easy to make them as well: http://www.foodlovers.co.nz/recipes/display.php?id=160 as one source. Or try this :- (US quantities, adapt to UK as needed).
1/2 cup water
1 orange, zested and juiced
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon natural vanilla extract
1 cup dried whole figs
Combine water, orange juice, orange zest, cinnamon, brown sugar, and vanilla in a small saucepan and place over medium heat. Add the figs and cook until reconstituted, about 10 minutes.
Half the water and use a 'gold' rum for the rest of the liquor to get the taste of the P/Express figs.
You could store these in an air tight jar - nice pressie for friends!!. Dried figs can be easiliy found - try a healthfood shop if you struggle.
Pleasure. See how many you can get in your mouth in 1 go! (figs, not the jar) - tis the season to be silly, etc etc etc. And add a little extra 'gold' or 'spiced' rum to the mascarpone to pep it up if you fancy.
Small fee due too, as its Christmas of course, of one of every item recommended on the food and drink site - but not the 'unknown gooey stuff from the kitchen cupboard'. Lord knows what that is!!
Do have a go at making the figs as well. Its an easy 10 - 15mins.
You may know Merchant Gourmet are a high street brand, so you may get a local deli to order them in if you ask nicely.
