Cat scatching my new carpet!!

I have just moved in to a lovely new house and spent a lot of money on carpets, my cat keeps scatching the carpets i thought it was because he was not going, but now he goes out he is still doing this he has a scatch pad but wont use it!! Advise please

Not a lot you can do to prevent this, they say rubbing a raw onion on a sofa your cat scratches will put him off but obviously this is impractical on a whole carpet!
Try to discourage him by making a loud sudden noise eg clapping hands when he scratches.

Cats, they have no respect for your carpets or furniture. I can only suggest getting some citrus smelling shake'n'vac to vacumn the carpets with. Cats hate the smell of citrus. He won't scratch at it because the smell will come out of the carpet which he won't like.

The only other solution is to shout no each time you catch him and he will know he is in the dog house.

You could try getting a scratching post and see if your cat will use that instead. Although my knowledge of cats tells me that don't take a lot of notice once their minds made up where they want to scratch.

Yep we have the same problem, moved into a new house, nice carpet, Cat starts ripping it up. Not a lot you can do I am afraid, I have tried the shouting and clapping thing everythime he does it, unfortunentley, he now thinks it is a game....

Try a water pistol! Cats hate the shock of getting wet, but it does them no harm. Accompany the squirt with a shout of NO

i waswondering if any one was going to suggest that andrew....it works brilliant, but always praise them when they use the right place to scratch ( ie pole )
