Not so long ago i was spoilt for choice of department stores to browse, there were at least 7 within walking distance. Now there is not one local to me.
These are the sort of goods I want to handle before buying but I cannot think of a single shop that sells Wedgwood and Waterford near by.

Maybe i need to move to somewhere posh

John lewis
A friend and I were just saying this the other day. Same with clothes - I like to feel the fabric. John Lewis has just about got the monopoly on the high st now.
John Lewis - great store - if you can afford their prices !!
Happy Christmas one and all.

Everything's moved online these days:

I've never seen the point of posh glassware though. I won't pay more than £1 per glass and I reckon that even that's expensive!
You can get some nice cutlery sets in TK Max if you have a decent one near you.
Wrap and Poetry are good for clothes.
Sainsbury's sell Habitat which is quite nice.
It's news to me that we are supposed to buy posh glasses and tableware.
What part of the country are you in, Barry?
I need a good glass for a good Wine or Whisky too Barry. As you say the discerning imbiber wants a glass that is correct. The weight and shape is important. The boutique shops are fast disappearing, but trawling the charity shops can supply a gem or two. Dunelm are a store with branches everywhere and sell Royal Doulton crystal glasses, but again infuriatingly only online, although they do have quite a good in store selection on show.

I`ve always thought there was a market in the UK for Crate And Barrel (a US brand) Especially as the Habitat brand has been acquired by Sainsburys. C&B are great and they do the seasons so well. They are not 'posh' though
IKEA works for me.
Assuming that most people who aspire to be posh have a dishwasher these days, just buy cheap glasses from Ikea or similar and regard them as expendable when they go cloudy and unappealing.
John Lewis is doomed.
It's a slow death, but the department store business model doesn't work any more.
TK Maxx definitely, an absolute treasure trove for lovely tableware.

TK Maxx, Dunelm, Ikea etc doesn't quite cut it for what I'm looking for. I do use inexpensive glass, china and flatware for day to day use, that I put in the dishwasher but I'm looking for something more special.
Do they sell that sort of thing in jewellery shops? I got a canteen of cutlery from H.Samuel 55 yrs ago and it only gets used at Christmas!
Which part of the country are you in, barry? Some of the Outlet shopping centres have shops selling crystal. One of the shops in Street, Somerset, sells crystal.
Nothing like the correct glass to hold a malt or a fine Port, and its not usually crystal just the correct shape and weight as Togo says.

John Lewis is your best bet if you want to hold it. Range is not what it used to be though.
