More from Octobers issue: All are Scottish words, terms or slang and also could also be regional Scottish terms or variations only used in specific geographical areas. Due to difficulty and often many variations of spelling, some of my adjoining letters might be in error.

6a. Strike (3) D??

7d. Far side of the path (4,3) ???E ???

10d. Mashed potatoes (7,7) ??A???? T?????N (considered CHAPPIT TATTIES but last letter is definitely N due to 37a answer HEID HIGHHEADYIN)

15d. Rowdy drinking (6) T????N

16d. Thin person or animal (14) S????Y?????Y?E (possibly starting with SKINNY but not sure yet)

20a. Without (6) Y?H??T

53a. Distorted (11) ????H?B????

16 Skinnymalinke

Sorry, Skinnymalinkie (long legs, big banana feet... went tae the pictures and fell throught the seat. When the picture started, Skinnymalinkie...)

20 Athoot

6 dab? (daub)

10 champit tatties? The answer is plural so will probably end in S.

HEID HIGHHEADYIN may not be correct for 37

When I suggested Heid Highheidyin before, it didn't seem to work with existing letters - there was an L in the second word.

This is what was given for 37:

Name given to person in charge (4,11) ???D / ?I?LY?A????

^ Sorry, I don't like the italics!

Name given to person in charge (4,11) ???D / ?I?LY?A????

6a  I might give someone a dad on the ear..some might say a dod on the ear.

37a  Not sure about Heid Highheadyin as the answer ....  the boss would be referred to as the Highheadyin

but there would not be another "heid" oer him/her.

53a  Doesn't quite fit your letters but  ...Bogshaivelt

BOGSHAIVELT, Bogjavled, Bowjavled, adj. “Distorted, knocked out of shape”

Well done Hazlinny

7d Just a thought  ... Ower yon

15d   Might be boozin  if "T" is wrong

What about, "camshauchle [ˈkamˈʃɑːxl, -ʃɔːxl, N. -ʃaːxl ]
adj. Distorted."?

Question Author

OK so HEID HIGHHEADYIN is looking wrong, after a few more corrections of adjoining answers - here's how it looks now:

HEID ?I????A?K?S

Another one I thought I had was 1d. Look after oneself (4,3,6)

I had HAUD AFF YERSEL but if 20a is ATHOOT (or possibly ITHOOT) then is can't be. Letters I have currently are:

H??? A?? A????L so it could still be HAUD AFF A????L, HAUD AFF I????L (bear in mind AFF could also be AWA).

Also have problem with 49d. Comfortably well off (3). I had NAB (variation of KNAB - Dictionaries of the Scots Language:: SND :: knab n2 (dsl.ac.uk)), but if 53a is BOGSHAIVELT then NAB can't be correct. Letters for 49d presently are ??I

Driving me mad this is!

Question Author

thecorbyloon: thanks for CAMSHAUCHLE. Can't prove either way yet without more letters. If it was CAMSHAUKLE then 49d Comfortably well off (3) would be ??U

Seems every time I think I've solved one, it unsolves another!

49d Fou?
