I see they are blaming their huge debt on very low water bills.

If Thames is your supplier how low is your bill?

I haven't for 16 years but when I did I  remember paying over 150 a year

We use Thames Water. We are careful with our water use and only pay £13 a month (metered).

Question Author

About the same of me, also metered, from Staffordshire Water

mind we are not charge for water in NI

Metered with Southern Water £9.10 monthly.  That's just me and the dog though.

Ho-ho, Christmas joke?

An unmetered supply averages at over £500 per year in a Band D house (Thames' own figures). Perhaps they shouldn't be persuading their customers to have a meter!

Question Author

Seems that way, ginge.

Their dividends to shareholders have I believe been very generous.

The water companies get slagged off for water loss through leaks but on both occasions we've reported a leak to Thames Water it has been repaired very quickly. One of the leaks was at the end of our drive and I was intrigued to see the man using divining rods to locate the exact position of the leak. I went to chat to him and he said it's a good way to find the exact location of the leak as the water usually breaks the surface at a point a distance from the broken pipe.

I thought the privatisation of utilities would be profitable for the shareholders.  What went wrong?

We pay £500 a year. Two of us. Unmetered.

Get a meter we quick sticks, David.

If it doesn't save you money you can go back to unmetered within, I think a  year

The water supply company supplying my place put the meters in the pavement and then compulsory switched to meter charging. No option. It's what you get when foolish enough to privatise utilities.

Question Author

Metered charging has saved me a lot of money, OG.  Who supplies your water?

I am unmetered  & pay £300 for 6 months.

no, thank God. our bills aren't low and we have to pay for all those informal fountains and seepages of theirs, never mind their discharging of our turds and more into Cornish waters. Enjoy the swimming out there, folk....

To be clear, I'm with South-West Water - better known a *hit Water, obviously.

sorry - *hit Worst Water....

Long hose pipe ban for you, I think, DT

I haven't got any hose on, barry......it's bloody chilly!
