Some awning makers might ask you for the maximun height as well, but not normally. Unless very specifically made for one caravan, most awnings will fit a small range of sizes - for example 15 to 16 feet, or whatever. I have purchased awnings for two caravans now and find that the simple body length measurement is fine.
I think most awning manufacturers these days size their products by ground-to-ground length; with the van on level ground, measure from the ground below the awning channel entry point at one end of the van, right round the channel to the corresponding point on the ground at the other. Armed with this dimension, any decent awning manufacturer or caravan dealer will be able to supply you an awning that will fit.
