Bamboo Plant

Should you remove the polystyrene base that comes with an indoor bamboo plant? It's a small plant in a ceramic bowl.

The instructions with mine says to remove the polysyrene base, keep away from direct sunlight and keep watered, no need to feed!!

Mine was given but I could see it was M&S. Instructions were never to let it dry out. It was in a flatish dish with polystyrene sponge packed round which I have left and always keep (or try to) wet.
