We want to paint our fitted bedroom units. They are not wood but some man made finish. Having watched loads of DIY programmes in the past but not taken anything in, what do we need to do rubbing down, primer(?) , paint type etc. Thanks

You need to paint on a laminate primer first, this will provide the key for the paint, then you can use normal emulsion to paint them in the colour of your choice.
There is a melamine primer, which can bought at most DIY stores. I would still recommend keying the surface regardless. Lightly sand, just to take bits off when dry. But I would say 'oil based' paints rather than emulsion. Emulsion won't take the knocks. Try a satinwood/eggshell finish.

You can clear varnish the surface once painted. Oil based paints take too long to dry.
