Free Elvis Presley DVD of Loving You

Tomorrow the Daily Mail is giving away a free DVD of Elvis Presley's film 'Loving You'. This is just the latest of many similar offers and inducements to buy newspapers, but isn't this practice grossly unfair on all those who have previously paid good money for such DVDs - anything up to �20 originally? Our DVD collections are being increasingly devalued by this practice.

Hey - have a go at the manufacturers who charge obscene amounts.

You can buy CD's and DVD's for next to nothing.

Why blame the papers - you dont have to buy it if you would rather pay �12 or so.

In fact Robert and I mean no offence to you but what are you moaning at?.

Well, I bought that movie on DVD when it first came out!

And on VHS video when that came out!!

And I saw it in the cinemas when it was originally released!!!

Now people can watch it for next to nothing.

Why am I moaning? Because I won't get any of my money back. Not even if I try to sell my DVD and video. That's devaluation at its worst.

I meant blank CD's and DVD's are next to nothing.I know where you are coming from but time marches on and it was inevitable this would happen.I also have bought music on tape and CD and lo and behold the compilations in the papers are sometimes better.

I cant believe you didnt anticipate this.E.G I knew 20 yrs ago when I bought a brick for a mobile phone that I would someday have a phone which would be a camera and video and WAP (not a clue) and different ringtones but I still bought the brick:)

besides, you shouldn't collect DVDs for their value. The copyright holders can rerelease them at any time in whatever volume they choose. They aren't one-offs like the Mona Lisa. Buy them if you want them. If you think they cost too much, wait and take the risk that the price will come down.

Clearly somebody has been left with a shed load of Elvis DVD's they can't shift. The newspaper buys them at well below cost and puts them out as a freebee. It's a kick in the pants to anyone that paid full price for a copy, but that's the dynamics of supply and demand for you!

I agree with jno, who on earth buys DVDs as an investment? We buy them because we want to watch them. Mr Spudqueen used to like TimeSlip as a child and we bought the first two series on video when they were released, unfortunately missing the release dates of series three and four. Mr Spudqueen bought series three off e-bay for about �30, but we decided we couldn't afford series four (about �60). Then about 18 months ago I found that there was a DVD with all four series on for �22 or thereabouts. Mr Spudqueen was delighted when I bought it him as a present, but the video we had spend �30 on was now worth about �1, just one of those things I'm afraid and not worth getting upset about.

In my experience the only value any collection has is what it means to you.DVDs,Cds and books,for example are incredibly cheap to produce,so they are useless as an investment.
