They have a number of additional components in them vs an ordinary socket - surge protector, ring capacitor, test resistor.
However, the service provider is supposed to install everything up to and including the Master socket. You would be in breach of your agreement with them if you install it.
However, I am sure many people who know what they are doing install them. You are only likely to be found out if there is a fault and the provider determines that you installed it. They could then possibly charge you. Pretty unlikely but your choice.
