Can static electricity be captured?

Is it possible to capture static electricity by means of a capacitor and discharging to a battery?

It is possible to capture and temporarily store the electricity and devices like Van de Graaf generators were designed by physicists to do this when they were trying to understand the physical properties. It at very high voltage but exceedingly low current so useless for powering anything.

Static electricity can be stored using a Leyden jar, I seem to remember that Benjamin Franklin was experimenting with lightning using one. I think that Leyden jars are capable of storing huge charges and have proved to be deadly on many occasions.
