Could someone give advise on how to clean an old gilt mirror frame which has been blackened by years of burning candles near to it?

Thanks in anticipation,

Give it a good wash with washing up liquid and a soft toothrbush in the cracks and a sponge, and dry it off. You will be amazed at the amount of dirt on it. Then use something like Goldfinger, which is a tube of gold leaf. Apply sparingly, it is quite dry as it comes out of the tube, so be careful you don't drop any as you will tread it in the carpet .. best to lay the mirror on newspaper first. Or buy some pale gold paint and a brush and apply it, trying the colour on a piece that doesn't show first, to see if the colour is right. I find the gold leaf is best, Antique Gold is a dark reddy gold, or you could try a lighter shade. Good luck !
Sorry I forgot to say, apply the Goldfinger or gold leaf sparingly with a soft dry cloth.
