Water tank

Hello all, I need advice, QUICKLY if possible!

Theres a REALLy funky smell coming from the bathroom where the hot water tank is.

The cat had been sneaking into the roofspace and I recently found up he'd been leaving little presents in there (taking a dump) I'm now clearing all his mess out to try and get rid of the smell - the place he pooped is right above the tanks etc.

However, I looked in the very top of the water cupboard and found another tank which is a square open topped one, probably goes to the boiler or something -

ITS FILTHY! It's full of mould or some kind of mineral buildup - it's disgusting! Is this easy to replace? or even clean - makes me feel sick to think my bath water comes from that! Could the smell come from that? Also I'm worried that it's got cat pizz in it now!

I think you'll find its the water that heats your radiators. You need to get a plumber in to drain the heating system, and refill it with water and furnox (I think thats what its called).

Might be worth building some kind of lid for it.

Sorry, just to elaborate. The Central Heating pump, which is usually in the airing cupboard, draws the water from this tank. The water is then heated in the bolier and then circulates round the radiators. Unsurprisingly, it does get filthy (especially if you have no cover on the tank).

Don't worry, this water is not used to fill your bath.

The tank is probably the overflow tank for the radiators - rest assured it is not anything to do with water that you would have to bath in or drink in any way. You could try putting chlorine tablets in it to purify the water, and this should also get rid of the smell.

If the cat has been going in there, is it possible that he has chased or killed a mouse up there? My parents had a revolting decaying smell coming from one of their cupboards, and it turned out to be a mouse that had crawled into a small gap and died. They never recovered the body, but the smell eventually just died away (no pun intended!)

well i've crawled through a space half my size into the roofspace! I cleared all the cat turds out of the insulation... eugh! and sprayed soapy bleach everywhere! Hopefully that might help, unless its the water tank!

It's nice to hear that it isn't bath water! I was gonna go dirty!

I'll try throwing some chlorine in there, thanks for the suggestion! Will it damage anything doing that - as it's a metal tank etc?
