Tootpaste caps are very good with a little plasticine in to make tubs for station plant displays .....
We used to cut branchy bits out of a privet hedge, paint on some PVA, dip in saw dust and spray green once dry. They make pretty realistic little trees..

Your best way of finding out about this is to buy a selection of modelling books,

For trees or foliage a section of sponge painted green is best.

I am not an anorak!

Expanding foam painted in lots of colours good for rocks: quick, easy, cheap, versatile and sculptable. Boring plain fish gravel is cheaper than model infill put it in a bag and take a rolling pin to it if it's too coarse.A huge vat of pva is about a tenner from B and Q.Don't forget car boots are good for authentic bits and bats to make it look like a bigger budget effort!

Twigs with ripped up kitchen sponge, dipped in greeny paint makes passable bushes. My son opened used teabags and spread contents out to dry! This was then carefully sprinkled and drybrushed over the track and then moistened with dilute PVA glue in an eye dropper. Labourious, but it looked exactly like ballast on the track. Watch the pointwork! Don't put much tea or glue here! PECO do a little booklet (from toy and model shops)on scenery, or get hold of some Railway Modeller magazines, old ones will do. Or join local Model club.
You could use a pipecleaner brush for a tree..... The Games workshop/Warhammer 40k kids are good for tips on making this sort of thing.
