How do I find out where the gas pipeline runs through my property. I want to dig out part of the front garden to make level parking and don't know if the gas comes into the front or the back of the house.

I think your local planning dept might provide some info.
Do you have a gas metre?
Its unlikely the planning department of either gas or council will have any info. As the above says, the entry point to the house is likely to be close to where the gas meter is. Bear in mind the pipe must have come from the public highway. You could dig down a little and try and find it.
Check the map, here, to see which company is responsible for gas distribution in your area:
http://www.nationalgrid.com/uk/Gas/Connections/domestic/
If your area is shown in dark blue, look up National Grid Gas in your local phone book and ask them for their advice. If your area is shown in light blue, look up the phone number of the relevant company, as indicated in the right-hand column of the webpage.
