I recently put a new bathroom suite in and was later told that I should have got planning permission for it even though all the fixtures were in the same place as before.

This didnt even enter my head at the time, is it true and if so how much would this have cost me?

Even if you were not told this on 1st April I think your leg was being pulled - unless you live in a particularly draconian location.
i agree with karl, never heard of needing permission for that.

Anyone know for sure?
You only need planning permission for things like extensions. All you've done is basically redecorate, so you don't need planning permission.
In the UK you wouldn't need planning permission. NOTE: you would need it for several other project appart from an extension!

I can't understand that unless you're in a listed building

Are you?

No i'm not in a listed building but was told that it was because i had replaced a bathtub?

I've never heard of having to get planning permission for installing a new bath. But in saying that, when I lived in a flat, we had to get permission from the management company to change bathroom and kitchen fittings.

Do you live in a freehold property or leasehold?

Freehold
You don't need planning permission, someones winding you up.
how would they know you have replaced the bath tub?

You don't need planning permission for this. It is a wind up as stated.
You don't need Planning Permission. If you altered anything to do with the soil pipes, you are likely to have required Building Control approval. Are you sure it isn't this that you have been told you need?
tell them you've got retro planning permision. also that you grassed them up for the wall paper in their hall way as it's got to be against the law. (or some simillar wind up. )

It's not a wind up, maybe the information is not correct, but they are not "winding me up"
You don’t need any planning permission for things like renovating your bathroom. Installation of a bathtub is a very common thing. Planning permissions are only needed in cases of extensions (and a few other cases). Don’t worry, it is fine..
