Does anyone know if this is legal? Allowed? Illegal?

We have a house being built next door and the builders cone off about 20 yards of street every week for their vehicles and no residents can park there. Beinf parking is tight down our street, this is p-ing a few people off.

Surely, only legal establishments and government agencies are allowed to restrict parking

It has no legal basis, you can move the cones and park there. Obviously they would like to reserve the area and you may get some abuse but legally they have no leg to stand on. Only those yellow cones with the restricted parking sign that the police use are legal. Technically they are probably committing an offence.

Thanks loosehead.

Since posting I mamaged (finally!) to get through to the local council highways department and they said:-

"It is not permitted to reserve or block part of a public highway using cones or any other methods. The ability to restrict parking on a public highway (by the use of road markings, cones or posts) is only permitted by Legal Body's and Government Agencies".

She also added... move them and if they continue to do it, call us and we'll fine them!

Nice words!

Do let us know if there's a next installment!!!
I had the same thing where I used to live. I knew it was illegal, but I didn't want to be the one to park there for fear of them keying my car :( Be careful!

as plocketsays, please let us know how you get on.

also whats stopping you putting their cones in the bin/hiding them/moving them to silly places all over the building site?
