When making joints in woodwork, eg. a mortice and tenon joint, is it recommended that the joint should be as tight a fit as possible or should there be a small amount of movement? This may sound like a stupid question, but if it's a supertight fit won't the glue scrape off the surfaces as you force it into place... then cause a surplus of glue in the bed of the joint which prevents a snug fit?
According to my Grandad, you make it as tight as possible. The molecules of glue are very small and wood is porous so even the snuggest of fits will allow bonding.
