Why do we do a big house clean in Spring?

Before electricity and modern conveniences houses used to get quite filthy over winter, with the coal fires and smoke from lamps and candles.

The early spring sunshine would show clearly just how dirty the place was and the better weather was a good opportunity to haul furnishings outdoors and get cleaning.

I guess the tradition has stayed with us in a new form - we prefer to decorate in spring and freshen our homes up that way.
