I have a standard holly tree about 5 feet tall growing in a pot. It has started to shed its leaves and looking a bit sick. can anyone recommend a solution?

I suspect it has become pot-bound and the roots need more space to expand or that they have become deficient in nutrients or moisture. Unless it is an enormous pot I would not expect a holly tree of that size to thrive indefinitely in a pot with its roots restricted. It's now the height of the growing season so not really a good time to move it except in desperation, which I suspect yours is. Either move it to a much bigger container with fresh compost and plenty of nutrients and moisture, or dig a big hole somewhere in your garden and give its roots their freedom, watering in in regularly for several weeks.

I agree with WendyS. It sounds pot bound. Don�t be afraid to tip it out briefly and have a look. You�ll be able to tell pretty easily as all you�ll see is roots!

If a bigger pot is not an option for you, you could also change the compost in your current pot (which will buy you a year perhaps) or feed it with some liquid feed to replace the nutrients. I�ve also found that sometimes reducing the roots (by � to a 1/3) can also reinvigorate a potted plant.
