gardener at hotel called the plant CUMFRY and was an old medicinal plant which can very quickly spread and would not advice it for small gardens

It was (and is) used for healing wounds and abrasions, encouraging bone growth in the case of fractures, and relieving arthritis. Also used on varicose ulcers. In addition, the leaves can make a good fertilizer. It's a perennial, so if it spreads, you'd have to dig out what you don't want.
