when we use the push button to flush the toilet we usually hear air escape and the flush was ok. now we hear air and water drips out of the push button. is there anything that can be cleaned/replaced or do we need a new cistern?

take the lid off the cistern and check how high the water is. it shouldn't be up to the button/handle. if it is the inlet valve needs adjusting.it should be a case of screwing it in by one or two turns. flush the loo then do it before it fills up and see what the new level is.

the cistern is concealed.it is attached to the push button via a plastic pipe which should only contain air but water is now present.when you now push the button water comes out instead of air &the toilet does not flush.
from what you have said i reacon it works on the water filling the cistern also pressurises the tube with the push button. when you push the button it allows the air to escape which releases the flush mechanism. you will need to see the other end of the tube and mechanism to evaluate why it has water in it and not air pressure.it is most likely what i said before, the water level is to high due to the inlet valve washer wearing slightly.
