The light in our bedroom ceiling, is positioned right by the window, not in the centre of the room. I think I have seen this before. I reckon our was dates from the 1920s/30s. Maybe earlier. Can anybody tell me why the light may have been positoned so off-centre and near the window....often I lie in bed wondering what it is doing there.......

To protect your modesty.

If you light was behind you your silhouette would show through the closed curtains.
The light was off centre as people used to put a dressing table, usually with triple mirrors, in the window, (usually a bay) and the light enabled "madam" to apply her make up!!
Hi darren, my house has the same thing in the main bedroom. My house was built in 1950s. I also often lie in bed wondering the same thing!
Ours is the same, but as our bed is in front of the window (nowhere else to put it) , it is very handy to read by.
Same here ..we live in a semi built in the 1930's and our main bedroom light is in the "bay" part of the window. My parents former home just along the road from me was the same when I lived there. The light is in front of you if you standing behind it and you cannot see anything through the curtains. They tended to have thinner unlined curtains then ...is the only reason I can think of.
