Good quality varnish is very temperamental stuff and will not dry properly if applied over a surface with the slightest amount of grease or polish. Also, if the varnish is a few years old and has previously been opened some of the the 'driers' in it could have evaporated. What to do ? Well, you could just wait it out - but that could take weeks, or you could remove it now with white spirit while it is still tacky. A very messy job, I'm afarid. Oh, and you should never thin varnish, in my opinion, just make sure it is well stirred or shaken. Good luck.
i have also noticed too that if the wheather is hot and humid paint and varnish takes a longer time to dry.
