Should I turn off my immersion heater during the day? At present I leave it on all day as the old habitants said it worked out cheaper but I'm beginning to wonder! My daytime reading was 2842kWh for a quarter and we are both out all day working with everything else switched off but for the fridge. The house has no gas supply and heating is electric but the last quarter this was not used.

I have my immersion heater on for 1.5 hours overnight - I have economy 7 so this is when it is cheapest.

I am home all day and find this gives plenty of hot water. My washing machine is cold fill only and I use an electric shower that takes in only cold water.

Should I run out of water - a very rare occurrence - it is easy to turn on 'boost' which heats it for a further one hour.

It is expensive and unnecessary to leave it on all day.
I totally agree with Ethel. Also ensure that your tank is well lagged to reduce heat loss.
