I think my old boiler is broke :-(

Hi there you guys,
I'm not sure but I think there is something wrong with my boiler. It is a potterton one and has been in the house since it was built which was about 5 years ago.
The main problem is is that it doesn't not come on/ignite when the hot water is on, only when the heating is on. I have read some other posts about this too, but didn't quite understand the solutions.
Can anyone tell me if this sounds like something i could resolve on my own cos it's not practical at the moment to have the heating and the hot water on as it is just too darn hot.
Normally the hot water and the heating come on together and are timed to do so; however, obviously, recently the heating was turned off altogether and it is since then that I have noticed the problem.
SHould I be phoning the Palace and asking to speak to a corgi; or can I keep my wallet in my pocket?
cheers dears, and many many hugest thanks
