why are earwigs called earwigs?

It's 'cause they're very slippery when you tread on them, and when you slip you say, "earwig go again". ;-)

Oh come on!! I'm not well, you know.
The site is right. I have heard that before. People belived they would crawl in your ear while you slept and lay eggs in or eat your brain.
I heard that old wives' tale but have never known of anyone having an earwig crawl into their ears.
I planted corn in my garden one summer. When I shucked them earwigs would often tumble out of the ears of corn. Could that be the ear the name refers to?
