Artexed Ceiling

My friend has just started to paint her bedroom ceiling with emulsion and pieces of the artex have come off in places, what's the best thing to do, she doesn't want to remove it all ?

I would call this a bonus. It's hard work trying to remove artex that has been done properly. If it has been done on top of plaster I WOULD remove it all, sand the surface smooth and paint. It will be worth it in the end.

If you do take it all off, beware that you might find more problems underneath it. I had woodchip on mine and decided to take it off because it was ugly but then realised that it had been put up to cover the cracks in the ceiling and then it was too late!

Why not plaster over it?

Hi she's on a budget,. She's about 50 so doesn't want to attempt plastering. Painting she can do and was hoping there was some kind of poly/plastic thingummy stuff she could apply to the patches so it wouldn't look so bad.

The normal thing to do before a ceiling is artexed over existing plaster is to apply a bonding agent, PVA glue watered down for example. It seems that the water based emulsion that is being applied is causing the artex to loosen. The only thing to try is to apply PVA over the top of the artex and around the area that it has come off and try to patch and paint again after it has dried. Whenever I have had to fill a hole in a ceiling that has been artexed I have used polyfiller and tried to copy the pattern of the artex, this is always on a very small area and works well but may not over a larger area.
