i am purchasing a house. the survey has come back and says the electrics show cause for concern, the heating system shows cause for concern and we should seek professional advice. does this sound like massive problems or just typical of a 50 yr old house. we are aware it needs upgrading but is this something we should stay away from?

how big is the house? if that is all they found don't let it put you off, have it rewired, have new central heating put in, problem solved, once the wiring is in you will never have to have it done again in your lifetime,
let us know size of house I will tell you roughly what it would cost to rewire where I live , Ray

If it is an old house then it may need completely rewiring.
If that is the case note that they will need to channel down every wall and remove or replace every mains socket.
They may even need to lift carpets and replace cables under the floorboards.
This will mean redecorating every room and maybe replacing every carpet (they never go back down proprerly once they have been lifted).
A major undertaking.

The survey says get professional advice, so get a electrician etc in for quotes. I do woodworm surveys and very often these surveyors will say seek professional advice for the simple reason they have seen something they dont understand, so to prevent the possibilty of claiming from them for professional negligence they put theirselves in the clear by advising you seek to professional advice.
Chances are any works required will be minimal on the heating side, unless it's been installed by a DIY'er. As raysparx says there may be a rewiring on the elects. but if this surveyor is not an expert then I doubt it will be anything big. Furthermore if you are paying for this he should be telling you what it is and not suggesting things to alarm you. Let him know how you feel at being frightened by his comments ! Hard@it
Thankyou everyone. I asked the surveyor and he said that the systems were old and could do with checking. Nothing major. The house needs completely decorating, plastering and carpeting so I think we will prob have it rewired as it will save having to do it all again at a later stage.
