Windows 98 Registry problem

Windows keeps automatically restoring old backups of my registry for me when I don't want it to. When I boot up, I get a blue screen (like scandisk) that says 'backing up registry' and 'restoring system files' before a message which says something like 'we found a problem with your system files and have restored a good version of the registry to fix it'. I can't run programs I recently installed, and have to keep rearranging my desktop so it's how I want it. Unless I backup the registry every time I shut down. I can't see why my system files would be corrupt, especially on days where I haven't installed anything to my knowledge. The problem started with it happening about once a month and now its almost every day. Has anyone else had this problem, or know how I can fix it? Oh yeah, and I scan the whole drive for viruses regularly, and it doesn't come up with any.

I think your hard drive is failing. Ghost your old HDD to a new one and see if it still happens.

If you feel brave and don't have too many installations to worry about how about deleting this version of Windows and reinstalling it; if that would prove to be inadvisable, why not try just running your Windows installation disc again?
