Is my toilet cistern going to flood?

What does it mean when the toilet cistern is making a noise like it is filling up but the water level doesnt seem to be rising???? i am scared to go to sleep in case it floods. we are covered with builders as new house but wondered whether to leave it til morning. doubt i will sleep with the noise. i have taken lid of but cant see anything untowards not that i am an expert!! hubby away at mo so really worried, dont know what to do!! help!!!!!!!!

It shouldn't flood, it should jut run in the toilet if it overfills ...

take off the cistern lid and have a look... if it's filling, lift the ball float slightly ...does it stop? ...

if yes, you can adjust it with the little screw at the end where it pivots...

if no ... don't sleep, just in case

thanks for that but its one of these stupid new design toilets. there is a button to flush it on top of cistern, it unscrews which i have done to have a look inside. it doesnt have a ball **** like the old fashioned loos, i cant seem to see anything similar either, help!!!!!

a decent plumber would install a shut-off valve on the pipe feeding the cistern ...

it would probably look like this

turn the screw a quarter turn with a suitalbe screwdriver or (butter knife) ... that will shut off the water to the cistern so you can sleep
