Not wishing to burst your buble, but I would'nt use compost thats less than three years old, I tried this once and accidentally introduced pests to my vegetable plot that had been doing a good job of breaking down the compost and continued to munch on my crops too.
When I'm saticfied its thoroughly rotted, I either fork it into the surfice, use it around individual plants when planting or add it to a trench when planting beans ect.
I think the autumn is a good time to spead it over the surfice and dig it in, in readyness for next years crops.
