If it is an established tree prune June to late July. Do not prune in winter. Do not be too savage keep pruning to a minimum. Pull off any suckers appearing at bottom of tree. Paint all cuts with Arbex to stop any infections. Hope this helps.
Am not sure I agree with skylight as June to late July will entail pruning the tree while it's still full of leaves and bearing fruit. I'd be tempted to leave it until autumn when the fruit has been picked and as soon as all the leaves have fallen. Don't prune in frosty weather though.
Hi wildsheep What I should have said is that the June pruning is restricted to new growth not bearing fruit this year. This is done at this time to prevent Silver Leaf disease. See: http://gardenaction.co.uk/fruit_veg_diary/frui t_veg_mini_project_march_2c_plum.asp
