My mum passed on this information ages ago, but I've forgotten - I think it involves a teacloth. Anyway, I'll stop rambling and wait for your Reader's Digest-like solutions!

Depends on the type of material. Some things you should iron inside out, others like trousers (pants) you should iron using a damp cloth .... a handkerchief is ideal. A mate of mine used to use brown paper - the sort that is used for wrapping parcels. Seemed to work.

just turn your clothes inside out before ironing
